The Last Ship

To promote Sting’s New Broadway musical, The Last Ship, we were presented an open brief – akin to writing for a music video pitch. The objective was to tell a visual and beautiful story that is emotionally tethered to the musical.

Storyboard Sequence

After reading the playscript, we developed a story about the father son relationship spanning multiple generations. The red ship is the visual thread connecting each scene and linking back to brand’s logo mark.

Production Approach

To achieve the final look, we went through quite an extensive R&D process. But it all started with real paint and brushes. These are few photos from our lighting stage.

The animation approach boiled down to the transitions – we had point A and knew we needed a fluid way to reach point B. The red ship was our narrative vessel, seamlessly weaving each scene together.

The end result is an amalgamation of hand painted illustrations, cel animation and scanned textures.
